How does LightForce™ Laser Therapy work?
Dr. Peter Ferraro: LightForce™ Laser Therapy is a non-invasive technique to help reduce pain and inflammation. The pain relief treatment is FDA cleared and it enables patients to have an alternative to drugs and surgery. The trick here is that it allows your body to utilize its own healing through a process called photobiomodulation.
The NFL Alumni Association has just announced a partnership with LightForce™ Laser Therapy to make the treatment available to former NFL players. How is your practice involved in this?
Dr. Peter Ferraro: Ferraro Spine and Rehabilitation is involved in that we are the official treatment provider for the NFL Alumni in northern New Jersey for this laser therapy as well as for the NFL Alumni Wellness Challenge of which I am the Chief Wellness Officer.
What are the most common conditions that these former NFL players have that the Laser Therapy helps to treat?
Dr. Peter Ferraro: Most of the players that we’re dealing with, that played in the NFL professionally, are dealing with a lot of musculoskeletal issues such as arthritis and pain. Many of them have had multitudes of surgeries which now have given them chronic pain. Even with those more severe more advanced chronic cases, three to five laser sessions have shown unbelievable improvement in their reduction of pain.
Is this Laser Therapy useful for current active athletes also?
Dr. Peter Ferraro: It absolutely is useful for current athletes in that whether it’s a high school, college, semi-pro, pro or further on into the NFL alumni – athletes get injured. A lot of what happens when there’s an injury is an acute inflammation to an area. The laser truly helps to reduce the inflammatory response as well as decreasing your pain response. It very much so helps with the active current athletes.
Can you describe the treatment experience and how quickly the effects are felt?
Dr. Peter Ferraro: During the treatment, you will feel a soothing warmth caused by increased cellular activity which activates a process leading to decreased pain and inflammation. Treatments typically last between five and ten minutes, depending on the condition. For a small area like an arthritic finger, it may be less than just under a minute. The heat produced during the treatment causes an immediate blood flow increase to the injured tissue of which the effects can be felt almost immediately. The increase in the cellular activity typically lasts for up to twenty-four hours and typically it varies by patient but changes happen between three and five total sessions.
